Japan's first modern steelworks. Forerunner of the current Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Kamaishi Steelworks. It began in 1857 (Ansei 4) when Oshima Takato successfully lit Japan's first Western-style blast furnace (daily production of about 2 tons). More blast furnaces were added later, but due to technical and management difficulties, most were abandoned in the early Meiji period. The Meiji government attempted to revive the steelworks by establishing the Kamaishi Steelworks under the Ministry of Public Works in 1874 (Meiji 7), but failed. Tanaka Chobei (1834-1901) acquired the steelworks, and in 1887 it was reopened as the privately run Kamaishi Mines Tanaka Steelworks. It eventually accounted for more than half of the nation's pig iron production. It was reorganized and renamed Tanaka Mines in 1917 (Taisho 6), and Kamaishi Mines in 1924, and transferred to Nippon Steel Corporation in 1934 (Showa 9) following the Great Steel Merger.
