A former town in Iwate County in the northwest of Iwate Prefecture. The town is served by the Hanawa Line and the Tohoku Expressway. The town is mountainous, including the slopes of Mt. Iwate, and dairy farming is thriving. Rice and vegetables are also produced here. Obuke Station was a transportation base for the raw ore and products of the Matsuo Mine. The town is home to the Yakehashiri lava flow (a special natural monument) from Mt. Iwate. In September 2005, the town merged with Ando Town and Matsuo Village in Iwate County to become Hachimantai City. Area: 167.16 km2 . Population: 19,096 (2003). 岩手県北西部,岩手郡の旧町。花輪線,東北自動車道が通じる。岩手山の斜面をはじめ山地が広く,酪農が盛ん。米,野菜も産する。大更(おおぶけ)駅は松尾鉱山の原鉱・製品の輸送基地であった。岩手山の焼走り溶岩流(特別天然記念物)がある。2005年9月,岩手郡安代町,松尾村と合併し市制,八幡平市となる。167.16km2。1万9096人(2003)。
