Military expenditure in Japan in the narrow sense. Postwar Japan's military expenditure began with postwar settlement expenses (later defense expenditures), and in 1950, the National Police Reserve, the predecessor of the Self-Defense Forces, was added, and from fiscal 1955, the two have been collectively called defense-related expenses. It consists of the Defense Agency (since January 2007, the Ministry of Defense), facility operation and related expenses (maintenance expenses for U.S. military bases in Japan), Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement grants, Defense Facilities Agency expenses, and National Defense Council expenses. It accounts for almost 6% of the expenditure budget. The 1976 National Defense Program Guidelines set a limit of 1% of GNP. However, as it was expected to exceed 1% in the 1987 budget, a new limit was introduced, the total amount method. → Related topic: Military-industrial complex Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
