Japanese: 金属ガラス - きんぞくがらす（英語表記）bulk metallic glass

A metal that remains in a supercooled liquid state even below its melting point, and solidifies in a glassy state without crystallizing even when cooled relatively slowly. Zirconia-based alloys are said to have the best glass forming function, and are strong yet highly tough. Because there is no volumetric shrinkage during solidification, they have excellent transferability to the shape of the mold, making them suitable for precision casting. Because they have excellent mass production reproducibility, there are high expectations for the realization of energy-saving, low-cost manufacturing methods for precision parts that are difficult to produce using mechanical processing methods.

融点以下でも過冷液体状態を保ち、比較的徐冷でも結晶化せずに凝固したガラス状態の金属。ジルコニア基の合金系が最もガラス成形機能が高いとされ、高強度でありながら、高い靱(じん)性を持つ。凝固に際して体積収縮がないために、金型形状に対する優れた転写性を持ち、精密鋳造に適する。量産再現性に優れるので、機械加工法では困難な精密部品の省エネルギー、低コスト製造法実現への期待が高まっている。
