A constitutional kingdom in northwestern Europe. Official name: Kingdom of the Netherlands. The capital is Amsterdam, but the royal family and government offices are in The Hague. It is located in low-lying areas along the North Sea coast, with one-quarter of the country's land area below sea level. After being under Habsburg rule and Spanish rule, it declared independence in 1581. In the 17th century, it developed into Europe's leading trading nation, and has been trading with Japan since 1609.
