This is a movable-blade propeller turbine (axial-flow turbine) invented in 1912 by Viktor Kaplan (1876-1934), a professor at the University of Brühn in Austria. When the amount of water changes, the direction of the water flow into the impeller changes, but the part where the blades are attached to the boss can be rotated, and the blades are automatically adjusted to the appropriate inclination according to the change in the inflow direction. This makes it more efficient to operate than fixed-blade types, and most large propeller turbines are of this type. The blade inclination angle adjustment device is housed in the boss, and a hydraulic mechanism is used to rotate the blade attachment shaft in conjunction with the opening of the guide vanes according to commands from the governor.
