Kaplan turbine

This is a movable-blade propeller turbine (axial-flow turbine) invented in 1912 by Viktor Kaplan (1876-1934), a professor at the University of Brühn in Austria. When the amount of water changes, the direction of the water flow into the impeller changes, but the part where the blades are attached to the boss can be rotated, and the blades are automatically adjusted to the appropriate inclination according to the change in the inflow direction. This makes it more efficient to operate than fixed-blade types, and most large propeller turbines are of this type. The blade inclination angle adjustment device is housed in the boss, and a hydraulic mechanism is used to rotate the blade attachment shaft in conjunction with the opening of the guide vanes according to commands from the governor.

オーストリアのブリューン大学教授カプランViktor Kaplan（1876―1934）が1912年に考案した可動羽根式のプロペラ水車（軸流水車）である。水量が変わると羽根車への水流の流入方向が変化するが、羽根のボスへの取付け部分を回転させることができるようになっていて、流入方向の変化に応じて羽根は自動的に適当な傾きに調節される。そのため固定羽根式のものに比べて効率よく運転できる特徴があり、大型のプロペラ水車はほとんどこの形式となっている。羽根の傾き角の調節装置はボス内に収められており、調速機からの指令により油圧機構を用いて、案内羽根の開度と連動して羽根の取付け軸を回転させるようになっている。
