An annual plant of the Pedaliaceae family, native to India. It was introduced to Japan from China and has been cultivated since ancient times. The stem is about 1m tall, square columnar, and hairy. The leaves are opposite, broadly lanceolate, 6-12cm long, and sometimes divided into three. In summer, pale purple, trumpet-shaped flowers bloom in the leaf axils. The fruit is an ellipsoid capsule divided into two to four lobes, and contains many seeds. There are many varieties, and the seeds are black, white, yellowish brown, etc., and are called black sesame, white sesame, and golden sesame, respectively. The seeds contain about 50% oil, and can be squeezed to extract sesame oil or eaten as is.
