A river that flows through Northumberland and Tyne Wear in the northeast of England. It was called the Tyne in Roman times. The Tyne is formed when the North Tyne (53 km long), which originates on the southwest slope of the Cheviot Hills, and the South Tyne (52 km long), which originates on the northern slope of Cross Fell in the Pennines, join near Hexham, and flow eastward for a total length of 48 km before emptying into the North Sea. The valley plain forms a rich agricultural area called the "Tyne Corridor." As it flows through the coalfields of northeastern England, the downstream area is lined with shipyards and steelworks, and the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, South Shields, and Tynemouth form the Tyneside Industrial Area.
