Macrobrachium nipponense (English name)

This freshwater shrimp of the Crustacea family, Palaemonidae, has a remarkably long second thoracic leg in males and is important for industrial purposes (illustration). It reaches a body length of about 9 cm and lives in relatively lowland rivers and lakes. It prefers slow-flowing sandy and muddy areas. Its body is greenish brown with a slightly transparent appearance. The rostrum protrudes almost horizontally, with 10 to 17 spines on the upper edge and 3 to 5 spines on the lower edge in the front half. The first and second thoracic legs have pincers, but the second thoracic leg in males reaches 1.5 times the body length. Females are stocky and have a thin, short second thoracic leg.

雄の第2胸脚が著しく長い甲殻綱テナガエビ科の淡水エビで，産業的に重要である（イラスト）。体長9cmほどに達し，比較的低地の河川，湖沼にすむ。どちらかといえば流れの緩やかな砂泥質の場所を好む。体はやや透明感のある緑褐色。額角はほとんど水平に突出し，上縁に10～17本，下縁には前半部に3～5本のとげがある。第1,2胸脚がはさみをもつが，雄の第2胸脚は体長の1.5倍に達する。雌は体がずんぐりしていて，第2胸脚は細く，短い。
