Parnaíba River (English spelling)

Parnaíba River (English spelling)
This river is about 1,700 km long and flows along the border between the states of Maranhão and Piauí in northeastern Brazil. It originates in the Mangabeiras mountain range in the northern part of the Brazilian plateau, flows roughly northeast, turns north near Floriano, passes through Teresina, the capital of Piauí state, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Parnaiba. Most of the basin is semi-arid, and the flow rate drops significantly in the dry season. For this reason, cultivation on the várzea (floodplain) is important. [Nishizawa Toshie]
