269 BCE - 197 BCE King of Pergamum. Reigned 241-197 BC. After gaining control of the kingdom of Pergamum, he refused to pay tribute to the Galatians. In 241 BC, he defeated them and assumed the title of king. Caught between the powerful nations of Syria and Macedonia, Pergamum gradually drew closer to Rome for the sake of his own security. In the Second Macedonian War (200-197 BC), Pergamum fought against Macedonia as a loyal ally of Rome and was able to make Pergamum a great power. He was an accomplished soldier and politician, but he was also known as a lover and patron of Greek art. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
