Kan'on - Kan'on

Japanese: 漢音 - かんおん
Kan'on - Kan'on
One of the Japanese pronunciations of Chinese characters. Following Go-on, it was introduced to Japan by Japanese envoys and monks studying abroad during the Sui and Tang dynasties. During the Heian period, it was designated as the correct pronunciation to be studied and taught, and is therefore also called "sei-on." It is mainly based on the northwestern dialects of Luoyang and Chang'an (now Xi'an). The main differences with Go-on are: (1) Go-on retains the distinction between clear and dull sounds found in Chinese (Zau (糟), Sau (尚)), whereas Kan-on is all clear sounds (both sau); (2) Go-on incorporates the Chinese sounds /m/ and /n/ in the ma and na rows (Man (萬), Nu (奴)), whereas Kan-on uses the ba and da rows (ban, do). (3) The /-t/ in Chinese characters can sometimes be pronounced as chi in Go-on (shichi, quality), but always as tsu in Kan-on (shitsu, quality).
