The name of a kabuki theater. It is the oldest of the three Edo theaters. It was first built in February 1624 by Saruwaka Kanzaburo I at Nakabashi in Edo and was called Saruwaka-za, and later took his real surname, Nakamura-za. In the 9th year of the same year, it moved to Negi-cho, and then in 1851 to Kamisakai-cho (Sakai-cho), where it flourished, but in 1842, during the Tenpo Reforms, all three theaters were ordered to move to Saruwaka-cho. After the Meiji period, it went into decline, and was renamed Miyako-za and Saruwaka-za. In 1884, it moved to Asakusa Torigoe and performed there, but it burned down in 1893 and could not be rebuilt, and in 1895, when Nakamura Kanzaburo 13 died, the Nakamura-za name disappeared in both name and reality.
