After the German withdrawal, the Makhnovist peasant army maintained its position as the representative of the Ukrainian peasants, and cooperated with the Bolsheviks in the battle against the Ukrainian nationalist Simon Petlyura's (1879-1926) army and the White Guards Denikin and Wrangel's armies. Later, in 1919-20, however, it came into fierce conflict with the Bolsheviks over the Soviet government's grain requisitioning policy. In this respect, it has the same character as the Antonov Revolt in Tambov Province and the Zelyonyi (Green) Revolt in the same Ukraine. At its peak in the second half of 1919, it had a force of over 50,000 men, and Makhno was so strongly supported by the Ukrainian peasants that he was nicknamed "Bachko (Father)." *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Zelyonyi" are listed below.
