Erhu - er-hu

A Chinese stringed instrument. Also called "nanhu." A type of huqin in the broad sense. The neck is inserted into a cylindrical, octagonal, or hexagonal body, and is 80 cm long with a snakeskin surface 9 to 10 cm in diameter. It is played by placing a horsehair bow between two silk strings. The neck is held with the thumb of the left hand, and the strings are pressed with the index, middle, and ring fingers. It is tuned in fifths. The range is one octave. In Peking Opera, the low-pitched erhu (jing erhu) is often used in conjunction with the huqin (jing hu), which has a range one octave higher. The necks of the erhu used in regional operas (such as Yue ju and tin opera) and Cantonese music are slightly longer than those used in Peking Opera. In modern China, since the reform of playing techniques by Liu Tianhua (1895-1932), it has been established as a solo instrument.

中国の弦楽器。「南胡」ともいう。広義の胡琴の一種。円筒，八角筒，六角筒などの胴に棹を差込み，長さ 80cm，蛇皮面の径9～10cm。絹の二弦の間に馬尾の弓をはさんで擦奏する。左手親指で棹を握り，人差指，中指，薬指で弦を押える。調弦は5度。音域は1オクターブ。京劇では低い音の二胡 (京二胡) に対して1オクターブ高い音域の胡琴 (京胡) を併用することが多い。地方戯曲 (越劇，錫劇など) や広東音楽などに用いられるものは，京劇用のものより棹がやや長い。現在の中国では劉天華 (1895～1932) の演奏技法の改革以降，独奏楽器としての位置が確立されている。
