Japanese: カヌリ族 - カヌリぞく(英語表記)Kanuri
Kanuri people - Kanuri people (English spelling)
A tall black ethnic group living in the Bornu region of northeastern Nigeria and along the western shore of Lake Chad. The population is estimated at about 4 million. They speak Kanuri, a Nairo-Saharan language. They have been Muslim since the 11th century and respect the "Malikites Code," and in the 16th century they flourished the Bornu Empire. They are agriculturalists but also traders, with the trading city of Maiduguri being their center. Society is stratified, with the Shehu family, who control the religious government, forming the royal family, and there is also an aristocratic class. Most are commoners, but there was also a slave class before colonization. Kinship groups are not important, and the wealthy upper class heads of households are the center of many people. They practice polygamy and have up to four wives. Each wife has her own house and lives within one compound.
