Suwa Basin - Suwabonchi

A basin in central Nagano Prefecture, centered on Lake Suwa. The volcanoes of Yatsugatake and Tateshina rise to the east, and the Akaishi Mountains and the northern end of the Kiso Mountains approach to the southwest, bordered by the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line fault. The alluvial plain stretches from the lake to the southeast, with an elevation of 760m, but the eastern part is called the Yamaura region, and the gentle slope continues to about 1100m. As an inland highland, it is bitterly cold, with little precipitation, and is especially dry in winter. The alluvial land has been open since ancient times, and in the Edo period, the Nakasendo and Koshu Kaido roads intersected, so there was a lot of traffic between Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka. After the Meiji period, it became the center of the silk industry, and after World War II, precision manufacturing developed. Agar is a specialty of the area. It is densely populated with the cities of Suwa, Okaya, Chino, and Shimo-Suwa. Despite being a highland area, rice cultivation began in the Yamaura region at the end of the early modern period, and currently highland vegetables such as celery and lettuce are also cultivated. The region is home to Shimo-Suwa Onsen, Kami-Suwa Onsen, and Suwa Taisha Shrine, and is also a popular tourist destination, with the Kirigamine Plateau, Tateshina Plateau, and Fujimi Plateau in close proximity.

長野県中部，諏訪湖を中心とする盆地。東には八ヶ岳，蓼科山の火山がそびえ，南西は糸魚川-静岡構造線の断層で境されて赤石山脈と木曾山脈の北端が迫る。標高は湖から南東に延びる沖積平地で 760mであるが，東部は山浦地方と呼ばれ，緩傾斜地が 1100m付近まで続く。内陸高地のため寒さはきびしく，降水量は少く，特に冬は乾燥する。沖積地は古代から開け，江戸時代は中山道と甲州街道が交わるために江戸と京，大坂との交通が多かった。明治以後，製糸業の中心となり，第2次世界大戦後は精密工業が発達。寒天を特産する。諏訪市，岡谷市，茅野市，下諏訪町が立地して人口が稠密。山浦地方は高冷地にもかかわらず近世末から米作が始められ，現在はほかにセロリー，レタスなどの高冷地野菜の栽培が行われる。下諏訪温泉，上諏訪温泉，諏訪大社などがあり，霧ヶ峰高原，蓼科高原，富士見高原などを控えて，観光業も盛ん。
