...In the Meiji era, the Mangetsukai was formed in Kumamoto, and improved the Higo variety and kept it secret, but Nishida Nobutsune inherited some of it and bred it, creating the basis for the Higo variety that is sold commercially today. Yoshii Sadagoro (1776-1859) and others in Ise bred it separately, forming the basis for the Ise iris (illustration). Today, there are about 30 known iris gardens, excluding small ones, and they are more prosperous than they were before World War II. ...
