Noun: A Japanese performing art. From the Northern and Southern Courts period to the Muromachi period, Sarugaku, which was a miscellaneous art, developed into a musical drama centered on song and dance, and was called "Sarugaku no Noh." During the reign of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, Kan'ami, Zeami and others appeared and perfected it as a performing art. It is a bugaku dance centered on the shite ( leading actor) who sings the chant and performs to the accompaniment of music, and is often masked and highly stylized. It is also called simply "Noh," and the term "Nohgaku" was used after the Meiji period. In a broad sense, it can also include Kyogen. Currently, in addition to the five schools of shite (Kanze, Hosho, Konparu, Kongo, and Kita), there are three schools of supporting actors (Shimoken Hosho, Takayasu, and Fukuo), two schools of Kyogen actors (Okura and Izumi), and one or fourteen schools of musicians (three schools of flute actors, four schools of kodzumi actors, five schools of otsuzumi actors, and two schools of taiko drum actors).NohgakuSource: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
