...Kikyou-mizu and Kamikon-mizu (both in the Tohoku region) are similar in color, and names such as Masio (Mie Prefecture, etc.) and Hon-shio (Kinan) show the importance of the Kuroshio to fishermen. It is also called Hi-no-hon-shio, Kami-oki-shio (both in Miyazaki Prefecture), Kita-oki-shio (Sanriku region), and Otoshio (Izu Seven Islands). The existence of the Kuroshio has been known since ancient times, as can be seen from the story in the Tale of the Heike, for example, that a stupa was floated from Kikaigashima (Iwojima, Kagoshima Prefecture) and washed up on Miyajima in the Seto Inland Sea. The name Kuroshio is said to have first appeared in a document in 1782 (Tenmei 2) in Sato Yukinobu's Kaito Fudoki: Hachijojima, where there is a passage that reads, "...on the island, this is called both the Kuroshio and the Yama-shio..." *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kami no Okishio" is listed below. …
