AE (Metal) - AE

...The phenomenon in which energy stored in a solid in the form of strain is released in the form of elastic waves (sound waves) when the solid undergoes plastic deformation or fracture. It is often abbreviated as AE. It is used as a non-destructive inspection method for solid materials and structures such as metals, ceramics, and rocks, and as a means of researching the plastic deformation and fracture phenomena of these materials.
