Alocasia - Alocasia

Japanese:
Alocasia - Alocasia

A foliage plant of the Araceae family (APG classification: Araceae). It is distributed in tropical Asia. Some are edible, but Alocasia contains calcium oxalate throughout the plant, which can cause poisoning if eaten, so it is not edible. Heart-shaped leaves with long petioles similar to those of taro spread from the base of the plant, and grow slightly with each new leaf. Over a dozen species with beautiful leaf shapes, metallic colors, and luster are cultivated for ornamental purposes. Representative species include Sanderiana, which has dark green leaves with incised and silvery-white veins, Amazonica, which has shallow incisions, Cuprea, which has copper-colored, egg-shaped leaves with wavy surfaces, and Rowi and Putzeisii, which have blue-green leaves with silvery-white veins. They are weak in nature, so in winter, humidity should be high and the temperature should be kept above 18°C. They are propagated by layering from short stems, but depending on the species, they can also be divided into clumps.

use

In some parts of Polynesia, alocasia is ground up, soaked in water, steamed on stones in a bamboo tube, left overnight, and steamed on stones again to remove most of the oxalic acid, making it edible. Also, the ape ( A. macrorrhizos Schott) of Tahiti is cultivated as a crop because it is weakly poisonous. In some places, A. indica (Roxb.) Schott is also cultivated, and in India, A. cucullata and A. odora (Roxb.) K.Koch are also edible.

The indigenous Irritants of the Malay Peninsula used A. denudata Engl. to make poisonous arrows when fighting with other tribes.

Japanese:

K.Kochも食用にされる。
