An Italian architect living in Japan who was active in the early Meiji period, known for designing the Yushukan (1881) and the General Staff Office (1882). In 1876 (Meiji 9), he came to Japan as a preparatory teacher (in charge of drawing) at the Ministry of Public Works' Art School, and later moved to the Ministry's Construction Bureau and the Ministry of the Army.
