Japanese: セイウチ(海象) - セイウチ（英語表記）walrus

A mammal of the pinniped family, Odontidae (illustration). There is one family, one genus and one species. Two subspecies are found in the North Pacific and North Atlantic. Also known as Kaizou. In Eskimo, it is called aivuk. It has long tusks with distinctively developed canines in the upper jaw. The name walrus comes from the Russian sivuch. In English, it comes from the German Walross, but originally came from an Old English or Irish word meaning sea elephant. In the North Pacific, it is found in the Chukot Sea, the northern Bering Sea, and the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, but it is occasionally found in the south and has been caught off the coast of Hachinohe, Japan.

鰭脚（ききやく）目セイウチ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。1科1属1種。北太平洋と北大西洋に2亜種が分布する。別名カイゾウ。エスキモー語でaivuk。上あごの犬歯が特異的に発達した長大なきばをもつ。セイウチの名はロシア語のsivuchに由来する。英語は，ドイツ語のWalrossに由来するが，もともとは古い英語やアイルランド語の海象を意味することばに由来している。北太平洋では，チュコート海，ベーリング海北部，カムチャツカ半島東岸域に分布するが，まれに南に出現し，日本の八戸沖で捕獲された記録もある。
