Wu Wei-ye

Wu Wei-ye
[Born] Wanli 37 (1609)
[Died] Kangxi 10 (1671)
Chinese literati and painter in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Born in Taicang (Jiangsu Province). Style name: Jun Gong. Pen name: Meicun. Passed the Jinshi examination in 1631. Was serving as the Imperial Superintendent of Nanjing when the Ming fell and retired to his hometown. In 1653, he was invited by the Qing dynasty to serve, and was promoted from a secretary to a clerk in the Secretariat to a ceremonial wine in the Imperial Superintendent's Office. In 1654, he returned home to mourn his mother and died in Meicun, near his hometown, regretting having served the Qing dynasty. At a young age, he became a pupil of Zhang Pu and was recognized, and joined the literary society "Revival Society" at the same time as it was formed. His poetry in his youth was modeled on Tang poetry and was full of brilliant talent, but after the fall of the Ming, he wrote ancient seven-character poems with melancholy about the turmoil and tragedy of the country's fall at the end of the Ming, but his poetry faded in his later years. Along with Qian Qianyi, he held a leading position in the poetry world in the early Qing Dynasty, and together with Gong Dingji, he is known as one of the "Three Great Masters of the Jiangzuo." He also led the revival of poetry in the Qing Dynasty, and was skilled in calligraphy and painting. As a historian, he wrote works such as "Suikou Jilue" and plays such as "Mao Lingchun" and "Tong Tiantai." His works are collected in the "Mumura Family Manuscripts," and annotations of his poems are provided in "Wu Shi Jilan" by Jin Rongfan of the Qing Dynasty and "Wu Shi Zhuan Annotations" by Wu Yifeng.
