Friend

Japanese: ツレ
Friend
A term used in Japanese theater and music. It can also be written as "ren." Its usage differs depending on the genre. (1) Heikyoku: Singing in unison. (2) Noh: An abbreviation of shitezure, the role subordinate to shite. Tsure, subordinate to waki, is called wakizure or tsurewaki. (3) Shamisen music, Sokyoku: (a) Playing by two or more people is called renbiki, in which case the main player is called tate shamisen or tate, and may play a kaede, sharebiki, or other variations on the normal hand (called "ji" in Yamada-ryu Sokyoku), and the second and subsequent players are called waki shamisen or waki, and take charge of the normal hand, but the reverse can occur depending on the genre and situation. (b) Singing in unison. In particular in Kato-bushi, Itchu-bushi, and Yamada-ryu Sokyoku, the shite (tate) and waki and subsequent players sing together without singing different parts. In addition, since the original performance style of the Yamada school is singing and playing the guitar, it naturally also involves playing instruments in unison.
