Takasada Enya

Japanese:
Takasada Enya
Year of death: 4th year of Rekio/2nd year of Kōkoku (1341)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander during the late Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods. His father was Sasaki Sadakiyo. He was also known as Shioya Hangan and Oki Daifu Hangan. He served as Kebiishi, Saemon-no-jo, Oki no Kami, and Omi no Kami. He had held the position of guardian of Izumo Province since 1326, but when Emperor Go-Daigo fled Oki and raised an army at Funakamiyama in Hoki in 1333, he was one of the first to rush to support the Emperor's side and turn the tide of the battle in his favor. Due to his achievements, he played a leading role when the Emperor went to Kyoto, and with the inauguration of the Kenmu Restoration, he was appointed provincial governor of both Izumo and Oki Provinces, and a member of the Office of Decision-Making for Miscellaneous Lawsuits. When Ashikaga Takauji rebelled in Kamakura in 1335, he was appointed deputy shogun and fought on Takauji's side, but switched sides during the Battle of Hakone Takenoshita, and played an active role on Takauji's side thereafter. When the Muromachi Shogunate was established the following year, he was once again appointed shugo (military governor) of Izumo and Oki provinces, and while he endeavored to suppress the Southern Court forces within the country, he also led the military forces of Izumo and Hoki to attack Hokuriku by sea. However, in March 1341 (Kokoku 2), he suddenly fled Kyoto and was pursued by the Shogunate for plotting treason, and the following month he committed suicide in Sasafu, Izumo Province (Shinji Town, Yatsuka County, Shimane Prefecture). According to the Taiheiki, this was because Takashi Moronao, who was in love with Takasada's wife Nishidai, had slandered him. Nishidai also committed suicide in Kageyama, Harima Province (Toyotomi Town, Himeji City). This story was adapted into the Kanadehon Chushingura, and Shioya Hangan became the name of the character Takumi no Kami Asano, and became widely known throughout the country.
