A surveying method in which three visible points on the ground are selected to form a triangle, and the lengths of the three sides of the triangle are measured to determine surveying reference points over a wide area. With the advent of precision distance measuring instruments that use radio waves and laser light, this method has rapidly come into use, replacing the traditional method of measuring angles, triangulation.
