Hypersensitive state

...In many cases, the disease occurs due to an underlying abnormality in the recipient's constitution. At the end of the 19th century, E. von Behring observed that when animals were repeatedly injected with bacterial toxins, sometimes a very small amount of the toxin, less than the lethal dose, caused severe shock symptoms. He thought that this was because the animals had become hypersensitive to the toxin, and named this state hypersensitivity (Überempfindlichkeit in German). ...
