Lee Sung

A Chinese painter from the Five Dynasties to the early Northern Song. A descendant of the Tang Dynasty's imperial family. Originally from Chang'an. His grandfather moved to Yingqiu, Qingzhou (Shandong Province) to avoid the wars of the late Tang Dynasty. He enjoyed drinking and was good at poetry, but he painted only for his own enjoyment and produced few pictures. By the end of the Northern Song, there were already very few originals, and in his book "History of Painting," Mi Fu even advocated the "absence of Li" in response to the scarcity of his works. His paintings are described as "a thousand miles long," and he excelled in using light ink to paint vast, flat landscapes with low horizons. He is considered one of the three great landscape painters of his time, along with Guan Tong and Fan Kuan, and had a great influence on painting in the early Northern Song. Although it is a work that has been attributed to him, "Kyoshoheienzu" (Seikaido Bunko, Mie Prefecture) is famous as a good example of his style of painting.

中国、五代～北宋(ほくそう)初期の画家。唐の宗室の後裔(こうえい)。原籍は長安。祖父のとき唐末の戦乱を避けて青州営丘（山東省）に移り住んだ。酒をたしなみ、詩をよくしたが、絵は自ら楽しむためにのみ描き、寡作であった。北宋末にはすでに真跡もわずかで、米芾(べいふつ)はその著書『画史』のなかで、そのあまりの少なさに「無李論」を唱えたほどであった。その絵は「千里咫尺(せんりしせき)」と評されるように、淡墨により、水平線（地平線）を低く置き、平坦(へいたん)で広大な山野を描くのを得意とした。関同(かんどう)、范寛(はんかん)とともに当時の山水画の三大家とされ、北宋前期の絵画に大きな影響を与えた。伝称作としてではあるが、『喬松平遠(きょうしょうへいえん)図』（三重・澄懐堂文庫）がその画風をよく示すものとして有名である。
