Mortonagrion hirosei (discovered in Hinuma, Ibaraki Prefecture in 1971) is a species endemic to Japan, found only in large salty rivers and coastal salt lakes in Honshu, Aciagrion migratum is the only adult overwintering species in this family, Nehalennia speciosa is found only in the marshes of Hokkaido and the Tohoku region and in Ozegahara, Agrion lanceolatum and A. ecornulum are northern highland species shared with eastern Siberia. Ceriagrion melanurum (illustration), C. nipponicum and Mortonagrion selenion are plain species found south of Honshu, and also in central China. The most common of these are the Asian skimmer Ischnura asiatica (illustration), the blue skimmer I. senegalensis , and the black skimmer Cercion calamorum (illustration), and the Asian skimmer Ischnura is known to migrate over the ocean.
