A control character that means a carriage return. It indicates the position of a newline in a text file and returns the cursor to the beginning of the text. On Mac OS, only CR functions as a line break, and on UNIX, only LF functions as a line break, while on Windows, a combination of LF and CR is used to represent a line break. ◇From the initials of "carriage return."
