Diamond Sutra Faith - Kongokyoshinko

Japanese: 金剛経信仰 - こんごうきょうしんこう

This is a belief in the hope of obtaining the merits of the Diamond Sutra. There are six extant Chinese translations of the Diamond Sutra, and countless commentaries on it. Furthermore, a large-character stone-carved sutra remains on a cliff in Taishan, Shandong Province, which shows how widespread this belief has been since ancient times. In Zen Buddhism, it has been regarded as the go-to scripture in place of the Lanvākāvatāra Sūtra since the 5th patriarch, but it has also attracted faith among the general public, alongside the Kannon Samadhi Sutra. 《金剛般若経》の功徳を期待する信仰。金剛経の漢訳は現存するだけでも6訳があり，註疏（ちゆうそ）は無数にのぼる。また山東省泰山には磨崖の大字石経が残るなど，古来この信仰がいかに流布したかを物語る。禅宗では第5祖から《楞伽（りようが）経》にかわる所依経典とされたが，民間でも《観世音三昧経》とならんで信仰を集めた。孟献忠の《集験記》をはじめ段成式の《鳩異》など感応記や霊験伝が多い。【藤善真澄】
