This is a Naniwabushi play. Based on the story of the storyteller Kinezumi Kichigoro, and adapted by Hata Kiyoshi, it was performed by Mikado Hiroshi in the early Showa period, and the famous melody of "A flickering light in the distance..." became a hit and caused a sensation. The story is about a farmer named Jinbei who is saved by the thief Kinezumi Kichigoro and learns the Kannon Sutra to repay the favor. Mikado Hiroshi was inspired by a passage in Zen Master Ikkyu where the sutra is recited, and made it into a commercial piece called Utaiiri Kannon Sutra.
