Japanese: 唄入観音経 - うたいりかんのんきょう

This is a Naniwabushi play. Based on the story of the storyteller Kinezumi Kichigoro, and adapted by Hata Kiyoshi, it was performed by Mikado Hiroshi in the early Showa period, and the famous melody of "A flickering light in the distance..." became a hit and caused a sensation. The story is about a farmer named Jinbei who is saved by the thief Kinezumi Kichigoro and learns the Kannon Sutra to repay the favor. Mikado Hiroshi was inspired by a passage in Zen Master Ikkyu where the sutra is recited, and made it into a commercial piece called Utaiiri Kannon Sutra. [Yano Seiichi]

浪花節の演目。講釈ねたの《木鼠吉五郎（きねずみきちごろう）》に取材して畑喜代司が脚色したものを昭和初期に三門博（みかどひろし）が口演，〈遠くちらちら灯りがゆれる……〉の名調子が評判になって一世をふうびした。盗賊の木鼠吉五郎に助けられた百姓の甚兵衛が，その恩にむくいるため《観音経》を覚えるはなしだが，三門博は《一休禅師》に経を読むくだりがあることに想を得て，《唄入観音経》の売物に仕立てた。【矢野誠一】
