Cascais - Cascais (English spelling)

A seaside resort town in the Extremadura region in central-west Portugal, facing the Atlantic Ocean 30 km west of Lisbon. Population 32,972 (2001). It was an old fishing port, but developed after the royal family spent the summer here in 1870, and under the republic, the summer palace became the residence of the head of state. It is famous for its coastal caves. The resort town of Estoril is nearby.

ポルトガル中西部、エストレマドゥーラ地方の海浜保養都市。リスボンの西30キロメートル、大西洋に臨む。人口3万2972（2001）。古くからの漁港であったが、1870年に王室がここで夏を過ごして以来発達し、共和制下では離宮は元首の住居となった。海岸の洞窟(どうくつ)が有名。近くに保養都市エストリルがある。
