A seaside resort town in the Extremadura region in central-west Portugal, facing the Atlantic Ocean 30 km west of Lisbon. Population 32,972 (2001). It was an old fishing port, but developed after the royal family spent the summer here in 1870, and under the republic, the summer palace became the residence of the head of state. It is famous for its coastal caves. The resort town of Estoril is nearby.
