Ars amatoria

This work, written by the Roman poet Ovid around the year 1 A.D., means "The Art of Love." It consists of three books in the elegiac verse form, totaling 2,330 lines. The first two books were written for men, and the third was written for women in response to the positive reaction to the first two. It explains, with numerous examples, how to win a lover and how to maintain love once it has been achieved. This work angered Emperor Augustus and is thought to have been one of the reasons for Ovid's banishment.

ローマの詩人オウィディウスによって西暦元年ころ作られた作品で〈恋愛術〉を意味する。エレゲイアの詩形による3巻，計2330行から成り立ち，最初の2巻は男性を対象として書かれ，その反響にこたえて第3巻が女性に向けて書かれた。恋人をいかにして手に入れるか，またいったんかなえられた恋を長く保つにはいかにすべきかを豊富な実例によって説いたもので，この作品はアウグストゥス帝の怒りを買い，オウィディウスの追放の原因の一つになったと考えられる。
