This work, written by the Roman poet Ovid around the year 1 A.D., means "The Art of Love." It consists of three books in the elegiac verse form, totaling 2,330 lines. The first two books were written for men, and the third was written for women in response to the positive reaction to the first two. It explains, with numerous examples, how to win a lover and how to maintain love once it has been achieved. This work angered Emperor Augustus and is thought to have been one of the reasons for Ovid's banishment. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
