...The first documented mention of this temple is in the Toshikaden, where Fujiwara Muchimaro built Kehi Jinguji in 715 (Reiki 1) after receiving a prophecy from Kehi-no-kami of Echizen. This was followed by Shingan-ji, built by Yamato no Yakutsugu for Wakasahiko-no-kami in Wakasa during the Yoro era (717-724), Tado-Jinguji (Houn-ji) in Ise by Zen master Mangan in 763 (Tenpyo-hoji 7), and Kashima-Jinguji in Hitachi, built by the same master Mangan during the Tenpyo-shoho era (749-757). As time went on, the number of Jinguji increased, and they were generally established at shrines in various provinces. ...

…文献上の初見は，《藤氏家伝（とうしかでん）》に藤原武智麻呂（むちまろ）が715年(霊亀1)越前の気比（けひ）神の託宣をうけて建てたという気比神宮寺であろう。つづいて養老年間(717‐724)に和宅継（やまとのやかつぐ）が若狭の若狭比古（わかさひこ）神のために建てたという神願寺，763年(天平宝字7)に満願（まんがん）禅師が建てた伊勢の多度神宮寺(法雲寺)，また同じ満願が天平勝宝年間(749‐757)に建てたという常陸の鹿島神宮寺がある。時代の下降とともに神宮寺は増え，おおむね諸国の神社に設けられた。…
