Jussi Björling

1911‐60
Swedish tenor. He gained musical experience from an early age with his family. In 1928, he entered the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, and made his debut in 1930, singing the role of Ottavio in Don Giovanni in Stockholm. He subsequently appeared in opera houses throughout Europe and the US, and gained fame for his naturally lyrical voice and his firm dramatic expression. After World War II, he was active mainly at the Metropolitan Opera. His recordings of the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème in his later years are highly praised.

スウェーデンのテノール歌手。幼時から家族とともに音楽体験を積む。1928年ストックホルム王立音楽アカデミーに入学，在学中の30年にストックホルムで《ドン･ジョバンニ》のオッタビオ役を歌ってデビュー。その後，欧米各地のオペラ劇場に出演し，天性の抒情的な声と，劇的表現の確かさによって名声を得る。第2次大戦後はメトロポリタン歌劇場を中心に活躍した。レコードでは，晩年の《ラ･ボエーム》のロドルフォ役が高く評価されている。
