Skara Brae

This is the remains of a Neolithic settlement in the Orkney Islands, off the northern tip of the UK. It was discovered in 1850 when part of it was exposed by a storm. A national survey for conservation and maintenance was carried out between 1927 and 1930, directed by VG Child. The remains discovered span three periods. The third period is the clearest, and consists of seven dwellings and the passageways connecting them. The dwellings are square, with rounded corners and measuring 4 to 6.5 m on each side, with walls made of stacked flagstones and plastered clay, and the roofs were made of whalebone and covered with skin. The walls are thick and integrated with the walls of the adjacent dwellings, and the passageways are also roofed with flagstones.

イギリス北端のオークニー諸島にある新石器時代の集落遺跡。1850年，嵐のために一部が露出，発見された。1927‐30年に，V.G.チャイルドが指揮して，保存整備のための国営調査が実施された。検出された遺構は3時期にわたる。状況が最も明確なのは第3期で，7棟の住居とそれをつなぐ通路からなる。住居は1辺4～6.5mの隅丸方形，板石を積み粘土を塗って壁とし，屋根は鯨ひげをわたし，皮でおおったらしい。壁は厚く，隣接する住居の壁と一体となっており，通路上も板石を置いて屋根とする。
