…Thus, the 17th century can be said to be the age of difficult dictionaries, but the 18th century was the age when English dictionaries were established in the true sense. First, two English dictionaries, presumably edited by John Kersey, the New English Dictionary (1702) and the Anglo-Britannica (1708), included not only difficult and specialized words but also many everyday words, and were a step towards the compilation of general English dictionaries. Nathaniel Bailey's (died 1742) Universal Etymological Dictionary (1721) took this character as a general dictionary even further and contributed to the compilation of full-fledged English dictionaries by adding examples from contemporary writers, albeit on a small scale. …
