Born August 17, 1943. A skier from Yoichi, Hokkaido. He won the 70m jump (now the normal hill) at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. He recorded 84m and 79m, the longest distance without falling (Bakken record), and brought Japan its first gold medal at the Winter Olympics since its first participation in the St. Moritz Games in 1928. He was coached by his older brother, Masao Kasatani, a former World Championship representative, and placed third in the All Japan Championships as a first-year student at Yoichi High School in Hokkaido. While attending Meiji University, he won the Japan Championships in 1964 and 1965, becoming the leading ski jumper in Japan. He won the 1966 Universiade (Italy). He participated in the Olympics four times in a row, including the Innsbruck Games in 1964 and 1976 and the Grenoble Games in 1968. After working for Nikka Whisky, he became a managing director of the Ski Association of Japan and a director of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC).
