Yukio Kasaya

Japanese: 笠谷幸生 - かさやゆきお

Born August 17, 1943. A skier from Yoichi, Hokkaido. He won the 70m jump (now the normal hill) at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. He recorded 84m and 79m, the longest distance without falling (Bakken record), and brought Japan its first gold medal at the Winter Olympics since its first participation in the St. Moritz Games in 1928. He was coached by his older brother, Masao Kasatani, a former World Championship representative, and placed third in the All Japan Championships as a first-year student at Yoichi High School in Hokkaido. While attending Meiji University, he won the Japan Championships in 1964 and 1965, becoming the leading ski jumper in Japan. He won the 1966 Universiade (Italy). He participated in the Olympics four times in a row, including the Innsbruck Games in 1964 and 1976 and the Grenoble Games in 1968. After working for Nikka Whisky, he became a managing director of the Ski Association of Japan and a director of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC).

スキー選手。 1972年の札幌オリンピック冬季競技大会のジャンプ 70m級 (現在のノーマルヒル) で優勝。記録は 84m，79mと2回とも最長不倒距離 (バッケンレコード) で，1928年のサンモリッツ大会への初参加以来，日本に冬季オリンピック初の金メダルをもたらした。元世界選手権代表の兄，笠谷昌夫の指導を受け，北海道余市高校1年で全日本選手権大会3位。明治大学在学中の 1964，1965年の日本選手権大会に連続優勝し，日本におけるジャンプの第一人者となった。 1966年ユニバーシアード競技大会 (イタリア) で優勝。オリンピックには 1964年と 1976年のインスブルック大会，1968年のグルノーブル大会を含め4回連続出場。ニッカウヰスキー勤務ののち，全日本スキー連盟常務理事，日本オリンピック委員会 JOC理事。
