An ethnic autonomous region in northwest China, sandwiched between Gansu Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Its capital is Yinchuan. 33% of the population is Hui, 66% Han, Manchu and Mongolian. The Yellow River Basin in the northwest is irrigated and is the political, economic, cultural and transportation center of the autonomous region. The Helan Mountains are a nomadic region of grasslands and desert. Agriculture includes wheat, foxtail mill, sorghum, hemp, tobacco and medicinal materials, and livestock includes wool, cowhide and sheepskin. Minerals include coal and salt. Industry includes machinery, leather, wool products, flour milling, oil extraction and porcelain. Transportation is by water along the Yellow River and the Baolan Railway (Baotou to Lanzhou), and roads are relatively well developed. In October 1958, it was separated from Gansu Province to become an autonomous region. Area is approximately 66,000 km2 .
