Raindrops that are supercooled near or below freezing freeze onto the ground or objects. Tree branches and other objects become covered in smooth, transparent ice. It is not uncommon for raindrops to adhere to airplanes. Ice that forms when rainwater that has fallen cools later is not raindrop ice, even if it looks similar. The conditions for the formation of raindrop ice are a fairly thick layer of below-freezing air relatively close to the ground. Normally, it is only found in cold regions, but it has been observed in the subtropics of Hong Kong.
