1621‐86 A distinguished French nobleman. The fourth head of the House of Condé, the leading royal family. Known as "Le Grand Condé" for being a great general on a par with Turenne. He participated in the Thirty Years' War at a young age, and gained fame for his great victory at the Battle of Rocroy (1643). During the Fronde, he initially played a central role in the royal army, but was dissatisfied with not being given sufficient recognition for his military achievements, and led the great nobles to become a key figure in the "Fronde of the Nobles." After his defeat, he joined the Spanish army, but returned at the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
