Maned rat (maned mouse)

A mammal of the rodent family, muridae, subfamily, androdininae. It is a large rodent with a sturdy body and, as its name suggests, a mane of bristly hairs 8-9 cm long that runs from the top of the head down the back to the base of the tail. It is found in the highlands from Ethiopia and Somalia to Kenya. It is 25-36 cm long, 14-22 cm long, and weighs 590-920 g. It has glands that secrete poisonous fluids on its sides and is covered in short hair. The rest of its body is densely covered with long, silky hair, and it has a small head and short limbs. It has five fingers on both its front and back feet, with the first toe of its front foot being short but the first toe of its back foot being long and opposable like the other toes of monkeys, making it suitable for grasping objects.

齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科タテガミネズミ亜科の哺乳類。体つきはがんじょうで，名のように頭頂部から背筋に沿って尾の基部まで，長さ8～9cmもある剛毛のたてがみをもった大型のネズミ。エチオピア，ソマリアからケニアまでの高地に分布。体長25～36cm，尾長14～22cm，体重590～920g。体側には有毒液を分泌する腺があり，短毛で覆われる。体の他の部分には絹毛状の長毛が密生し，頭部は小さく，四肢は短い。前･後足とも5本の指があり，前足の第1指は短いが後足の第1指は長く，サル類のように他の指と向かい合い，物を握るのに適する。
