Also called hiaburi (burning by fire) or fukenei (burning execution). A type of punishment in the Edo period. Criminals were burned to death. Although hiaburi itself had been practiced since the Sengoku period, it was not until the Edo period that it was established as hojin (burning punishment). According to the Kojikata Osadamaki, this could only be imposed on those who committed arson, and their execution would be carried out after parading them around Kozukahara (Senju) or Suzugamori (Shinagawa), but if they were local, they could be sent to the place where they set fire. In addition, hojin always included the confiscation of fields, houses, and belongings, and parading them around, and the burned bodies were left exposed for three days and two nights, just like in the case of gokumon.
