Names of a prefecture and city in the center of Taiwan's east coast. Hualien is a port city with the most modern port on the east coast, built during the Japanese colonial period, and is home to thriving chemical and cement industries. It also developed as an industrial city with the development of hydroelectric power in the Takkiri Gorge (Liwu Gorge) in the north. The Hua-Su Highway connects to Suao in the north, and a railway connects to Taitung in the south. Hualien Airport is located here. Many indigenous Taiwanese people, primarily the Taroko people, live here. Taroko Gorge, where the marble of the Liwu River has been eroded, is known for its spectacular views and has been designated as Taroko National Park. Population: 333,897 (2013).

台湾の東海岸中部の県名，市名。花蓮市は港湾都市で，日本統治時代に作られた東海岸随一の近代的な港があり，化学工業，セメント工業が盛ん。北方タッキリ峡（立霧峡）の水力発電の開発により，工業都市としても発展した。北は蘇澳に通じる花蘇公路，南は台東まで鉄道が通じる。花蓮空港がある。タロコ族を中心に台湾先住民も多く住む。立霧渓の大理石が浸食された太魯閣渓谷は絶景として知られ，太魯閣国家公園に指定されている。人口33万3897人（2013）。
