The Kan'ei Three Horsemanship

Japanese: 寛永三馬術 - かんえいさんばじゅつ

Storytelling. A typical martial arts story with Magaki Heikurou, Mukai Kurodo, and Chikushi Ichibei as the main characters. The famous story is "Successful Spring Horse," in which Heikurou rides his horse up the Otokozaka slope of Shiba Atagoyama at the command of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu and plucks plum blossoms. Other stories include the love between master and servant Dodohei, who is trying to master the secret techniques of the Magaki school, and Heikurou, and the story of Dodohei (actually Kurodo) and Wadahei (actually Heikurou) riding wild horses in front of the Chancellor of Echizen (the Lord of Bishu in the book of true stories), which are still entertaining today and are often performed. 講談。曲垣（まがき）平九郎，向井蔵人，筑紫市兵衛を主人公とした典型的な武芸講談。そのうち平九郎が将軍徳川家光の命で芝愛宕山の男坂を馬で乗り上がり梅花を手折る《出世の春駒》が名高い。また曲垣流の秘術を会得しようとする度々平（どどへい）と平九郎との主従愛，越前宰相(実録本では尾州侯)の御前で荒馬を乗りこなす度々平(実は蔵人)と和田平(実は平九郎)のくだりは今日でもおもしろく，よく演じられる。【吉沢英明】
