The female protagonist of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." Born from a bamboo, she was raised by the bamboo cutter and his wife and grew into a radiantly beautiful princess. She turned down many marriage proposals from nobles by offering difficult problems, and did not respond to the Emperor 's summons. On the fifteenth night of the eighth month, she was greeted by a messenger from the moon and ascended to heaven. Princess Kaguya of the tender bamboo. [Etymology] (1) There is a theory that in ancient times, it was the pure consonant "Kakuyahime," but the relationship with "Kaguyahime" in the "Kojiki" should also be considered, and for other reasons, the voiced consonant "Kaguya" cannot necessarily be denied. (2) In the Middle Ages, the name "Princess Kaguya" was written as "Kakeihime" in the "Kaidoki," "Kakitsubime" in the "Shotoku Taishi Denshuisho," and "Kaguyahime" in the "Sankoku Denki." (3) In "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" and in works which quote it, such as "The Tale of Yamato," "The Tale of Utsubo," and "The Tale of Genji," Princess Kaguya returns to the moon, but in books such as "Tales of Times Now and Then - 31," she returns to the sky, the heavens, or the upper world.
