During the Meiji Restoration, an unlimited stipend was bestowed on members of the nobility and samurai classes. After the return of the domains and people to the Emperor in 1869, the former feudal lords and feudal retainers were given one-tenth of their previous stipends as perpetual stipends, but they were abolished in 1875 when the stipends were abolished. Among the prizes given to meritorious retainers during the Restoration, some were lifelong stipends, some were limited by a certain number of years, and some were perpetual stipends.
